Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via Kerung is a sacred pilgrimage to the foot of Mount Kailash. Located in far western Tibet, Mount Kailash is also regarded as Mount Meru, the center of the universe, by Buddhists. For Shiv bhakts this yatra is the ultimate journey in their lives as it takes them close to the abode of their beloved Lord Mahadev. The mountain is sacred for Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Bons. It is the place where the Buddhist saint Milarepa meditated and defeated the Bon priest Naro Bon-Chung. For Jains Kailash Parvat is Mount Ashtapada, the place where their guru Rishabhadev attained moksha. For practitioners of the Bon religion, Kailash is the ‘axis mundi’ or the point connecting the earth to the heavens.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra begins in Kathmandu with a darshan at the holy Pashupatinath Temple. Drive from Kathmandu to the Nepal-China border. Drive past the Tibetan highland and reach Lake Mansarovar. The holy lake shimmers like a blue jewel surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Wash away all your sins by taking a blissful dip at Mansarovar Lake. After meditating and performing puja on the bank of the holy lake you proceed towards Darchen. Begin your Kailash Parikrama from Tarboche. Walk around the sacred mountain. You can complete the parikrama on foot or hire a horse or pony to take you around the mountain. During the hike, you get a darshan of Kailash Parvat’s four faces. The Charan Sparsh hike will bring you to the foot of the north face of Mount Kailash. Only the blessed and the lucky get to touch the foot of the holy mountain. It is indeed a divine experience and one can feel the strong spiritual energy as one walks close to the mountain. The last leg of the parikrama will lead you to a high mountain pass Dolma La, the highest point of your journey. Once your parikrama is complete you drive back to Saga and return to Kathmandu
